Tips for Gardening

The weather has improved dramatically over the last week, making this an ideal time to do some gardening. Although gardening can seem straight forward, here are some important tips to consider when tending to your garden.

Maintaining Clean Tools

  1. Clean Sand and Mineral Oil: To keep your garden tools clean, use clean sand and mineral oil. The sand will keep your garden tools sharp while the mineral oil will keep them clean.
  2. Lubricate Your Shovel: Readers Digest recommends spraying your garden shovel with a silicone spray, or Teflon lubricant to remove the pesky dirt from your shovel.

Pest Control

  1. Used Coffee Grinds: What do Cats, Slugs, and Snails have in common? Funnily enough, they all hate coffee. Mix Used coffee Grinds into 6-8 inches of soil. This will help to keep slugs, snails, and cats away from your garden.
  2. Earthworms are A-Okay: If you notice an abundance of earthworms in your garden, don’t worry! Earthworms form tunnels as they move through the soil of a garden, and these tunnels allow food and water to get to the roots of plants.

Low Maintenance Plants

  1. Catmint: Although you may enjoy gardening, some plants require more work than others. The Catmint requires little maintenance and is said to last from the first to last frost. This plant is also unique, in that it is mosquito repellent. This will allow you to spend the evening tending to your garden without being pestered by mosquitos.
  2. Daisy: The White English Daisy’s add life to a garden and survive with little care.
  3. Variegated Ribbon Grass: Ribbon Grass is a very useful plant for filling up space in the garden. It can reach two feet or more in height, affording extra privacy in your front garden. Ribbon Grass also requires little maintenance.
