Social Distancing and its Implications for Mental Health

Out for a quick hike through 16 Mile creek, to be clear, this was only for exercise and not to socialize! But it was nice to see a friendly smile in these difficult times. The term social distancing has become synonymous with the Covid-19 Pandemic, and it is vital in the quest to ensure public health and safety. We thought it was a meaningful discussion to raise, as we finish our second week of social distancing.

The implication of this term for some, however, is to put space between us socially, but we need to be distancing ourselves physically. We must remain connected to our communities so long as it doesn’t require physical proximity.

What could prove most beneficial for people struggling with self-isolation right now is a social connection. So reach out to friends through social media, call a loved one and let them know you’re thinking about them this weekend. Several studies have shown that social networks, even without physical proximity, can have profound impacts on our mental and spiritual health.
