Home Improvement Projects for Summer

Summer is here, and what better time is there to make some home improvements? Warm weather and long days are perfect for building a new deck. Once you create your deck, you can add comfortable outdoor furniture, potted flowers, and even an outdoor kitchen complete with a barbecue and an outdoor heater.

Why not spend some time this summer improving your landscaping? You don’t need a green thumb for rock or succulent gardens, and planting a simple perennial garden that will thrive every year is possible. Also, ponds are beautiful additions to a landscape and your local wildlife – if you have space.

Pressure washing is one of the easiest ways to improve your home’s appearance significantly. Give your walkways, driveway and home exterior a high-power shower after a long winter of salt and snow. With a little effort, all your surfaces will look brand new.

Investing in new windows is also something to consider. While opening your windows during the first warm days of spring, you may have noticed they’re a little worse for wear. Old windows can cause drafts while installing new ones can cut your home energy costs in summer and winter as you run air conditioning and heat. Plus, new windows can be an easy way to transform the look of your home, especially when combined with other home projects.

Clean out your gutters. Summer can bring sunshine, but it can also invite intense rainstorms, so you’ll want to ensure your gutters are clear and in prime condition. Blocked gutters can lead to water damage and an increase in pests.

If your garage is full, why not build a shed if you have room. It’s amazing how much storage you will have in even a small shed for bicycles and other articles taking up space in your garage and basement.

Summer is also a perfect time to paint the outside of your house. Fresh paint doesn’t just make your home look great — it’s also a protective skin against damaging UV light and moisture.

Spending more time outside this summer can do wonders for your physical and mental health and reduce your indoor cooling and lighting costs.

The bonus for your hard work is the increase in your home’s appeal and resale value!
