Getting Over the Winter Blues

Getting Over the Winter Blues

I have great news for those suffering the winter blues; we’re already halfway through the season. Ever wonder why they call it the “winter blues”? A large body of research suggests that cold temperatures and gloomy skies can damper our mood, causing seasonal affective disorder. However, there are some natural and healthy ways to enhance our mental health and productivity during these dreary months.

Exercising
Exercise is essential not only for our physical health but our mental health as well. For example, a combination of cardiovascular and weight resistance training 4-5 times weekly for 30-45 minute sessions can reduce anxiety and depression and enhance mental clarity. In addition, physical activity increases the body’s “feel good” chemical produced by the brain and spinal cord that evokes feelings of happiness and euphoria.

Drinking Water
Water makes up 50-70% of your body weight. Therefore, it is essential to Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is: About 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) of fluids a day for men. About 11.5 cups (2.7 litres) of fluids a day for women.

Exposure to Natural Light
Expose yourself to light when you wake up. Taking in natural light right after waking tells the brain it’s time to wake up and get on with your day. If it’s dark out, simulate natural light by turning on the lights in your home.

Practicing gratitude
At times this is easier said than done. However, thinking of things to be grateful for will help to shift from negative thoughts to positive and constructive ones.

Connecting with others
Stay social and connect with others. The pandemic ushered us into our homes and isolated us from people outside our bubbles. Consequently, the social muscle has atrophied. So give those social skills a workout by connecting with people to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Looking forward to the summer sunshine and warmer temperatures, but for now, incorporate these tips into your daily routine to get through the winter blues.
